I got a lot of answers saying he is eather hybrid or shepard mix. I want to know hot to tell those apart... He may be shepard but I think shpards are more slender... But then again he may be fat. How do I tell if a hairy dog is fat? The hair confuses me.
And for those of you saying I WANT him to be wolf are very wrong, I just want to know what he is. And of coarse I'm happy to have him (Aside from destroying everything in his path) but I'm a very curious person so if you think I want to him to be wolf please keep it to yourselves.
So the questions here are:
How to determine if my dog is a hybrid or Shepard?
How to determine if a very haiy dog is overweught?
Thank you for your tolerance.

He looks like he may have some Malamute in him. They are dogs that look like wolves, similar to Husky's but bigger. His coat looks like something entirely different than either Malamute or wolf. Malamutes are beautiful dogs and your dog is a beautiful mix. What color are his eyes?
Here's a photo of a young Malamute:

I can help you with the over weight issue. A dog who is the perfect weight, you can not See his ribs, but easily feel his ribs. If you run your hand over his rib cage, and you can't feel his ribs, or if you can pinch some fat, he is over weight. Also, a dog with a good weight should have a small waist, a small tuck on the sides of his tummy, and under his tummy. If he is flat, kind of boxy looking, he is over weight.
Try looking at this chart, it's not the best, but it may help. The picture in the middle is the picture of a perfect weight for a dog:

I don't think there is any way to tell for sure what he is. As for his body condition, even with all the hair, you should see a waist from the top and from the side, and you should be able to feel his ribs easily. If you can grab a hanful of flab over his ribs, or if you can't feel his ribs at all, he's fat!!!

Hybrids cannot reproduce. Determine fat level by feeling dogs ribs.Prominent ribs usually indicate underweight and if yopu cannot feel the hardly at all the dog is fat.Check with a vet school for whst your dog should weigh. Most of them will let you come in to weigh ypour dog.

If the dog is domesticated and friendly, it is not much wolf. All young dogs for the first one to two years chew things up閳ユ敄his is when most of them are given away. If you can feel his ribs, he is not overweight.

I actually had 2 hybrids they were malute-gray wolf. Your vet should be able to determine if you have an exotic and in some states they are illegal to posses and in others they must be registered. Feel your dogs sides if you can still feel ribs don't worry about him. With a hybrid they will at some point attempt to show dominance, they are non adoptable which means if you chose not to keep your friend they will be put down if you take him to a shelter in most case. When I moved I could not bring mine with me for one I couldn't imagine a 2600 mile trip with them in the car, so they were sent to a sanctuary for hybrids. Also these animals will attack other animals smaller then them its just natural for them. Don't get me wrong I loved my two {leera and Frosty} and I personally never thought they would but then I saw them attack a dog and it was just like you see in movies how they attack and throw the animal in the air for their "partner" to be active in the attack. As these dogs age their personalities do come out regardless of if its good or bad and when the time comes this animals attempts to show dominance over you, the look in his eyes will say it all but do not, I repeat do NOT back down. I had mine for 8 years. If you'd like to see photos let me know I can email you some.

i have a wolf/shepherd mix... first, you can't really tell by the size... mine has wolf paws.. actually the DNR was tracking him because they thought there was a wolf in the area... so, that's how I found out that his paws are very wolf-like... I think the most telling sign of a wolf dog is that they are extremely mischievious and intelligent... wolf dogs need to be trained very well, have a very dominant human as the pack leader, and have a lot of mental stimulation so they are not left to satisfy that need as they see fit... I took mine to obiedience training, read training manuals... and watch Ceasar Millan on the cable show "the dog wisperer"... I've learned a lot from Ceasar.....
does it really matter if your dog is wolf or not? just learn how to take care of him/her responsibly

Who cares what he is. He's your pet and you love him. It doesn't matter what breed he is. I don't understand why it is important to you to have a bunch of people you know know, who don't know you tell you what your dog is.
The only way to tell what he is is to DNA test him. And all dogs are part wolf anyway.
How to tell is a hairy dog is fat? Feel his ribcage - you should be able to easily feel his ribs under a thin layer of fat. He should have a waistline and a tuck where his ribs leave off at his abdomen.
Another question about my dog and wolfiness.?
If he is over 6 months old, his temperament will probably tell you whether he is all dog or not. Most hybrids have different personalities than regular dogs. They're more stubborn and develop much different relationships with humans. If he strikes you as the all American pet dog in his behavior, then he probably is.
Another question about my dog and wolfiness.?
haha..i totally get the inquiwsitve nature, I'm the same way!
Why don't you ask a local breeder, I'm sure you can contact someone who will be able to give you a breakdown. OR you could look specifically for a hybrid wolf breeder, they would most certainly be able to tell you.
If you're really rich, you could have a DNA test done, my friends daughter had one and they could tell what percentage she was hawaiin, african american, indian...probably the same for dogs.
