Why is my dog losing his fur?

We have a six year old lab retriever. He is losing fur in clumps. His hair is thinning and whenever his scratches or bites at his fur it falls out. We took him to the vet and we asked if he had mange. The vet said he didn't and suggested that it was just an allergy and put our dog on medicine. he has been on it for a while and it is not making a difference. our dog is still suffering hair loss. any ideas on what it could be?

If it's more than the normal shedding of old hair. Be sure to treat him with frontline or advantage to rule out fleas. He may be hypothyroid, which can cause hairloss. Has he gained any weight lately? that can be another sign of hypothyroidism. A simple blood test can let you know if that is the problem. You also might consider a high quality dog food and omega fatty acide suplements.

you could always try the pet shop to see if they have got any shampoo remedies to use. have you checked for fleas because she may be getting stressed out with all the itching and thats why shes loosing the fur. Good Luck!
