Dry Hacking cough is usually "Kennel Cough" Very contagious!!!!It is not life threatening but the side effects can be dangerous.Sometimes they will have upper respiratory problems .They can even develope pneumonia.There is not really a cure for the cough just palative and preventative help with the complications caused by it.It usually takes several weeks for them to get over it and it worsens in the evening.You can run a vaporizer day and night to help loosen mucus and moisten the breathing passage.Also there are other meds the vet can give to help but not cure.It will just take time.It sounds horrible but if you follow the vets instructions he will finally get over it. would be better if you mentioned breed of dog.. because small dogs can have trachial collapse (worse than it sounds) its where the trachia muscles get weak in certain small breeds and causes a honking cough like its bringing up a hairball... also it MAY be worms that can cause it too.. you didnt say if he actually IS coughing up hairballs and if he is then thats what it is :) you can buy over the counter hairball remedies for it and they will help ..... if its NOT hairballs and it continues i would recommend taking him to the vet cause if its the trachial problem OR worms that bad he needs to be seen.... hope this helps

My grandmas dog has been coughing like you described and I took her to the vet and was told that she has a slightly enlarged heart which is causing her to cough....she is in no danger and it is common in small dogs...my advice is if it gets worse go to the vet for xrays to find out for sure. It could be:

~Kennel Cough [very contagious!]

~Pneumonia

~Enlarged Heart (Heart Failure)

~Collapsing Trachea

~Respiratory Infection

~Allergies

I suggest taking your dog to your vet to get it checked out. (If it is a chest infection it could turn into pneumonia, so the sooner you take him in the better)

I agree with all the answers already given, and must add:

Roundworms

They can migrate to the lungs creating a cough also.
