I know that Chows, not small dogs, have black tongues. Mixed Chow pups often get black spots on their tongues. It may have been passed through a few generations of smaller dogs similar to the Lhasa Apso.

The chow chow is the only breed of dog that I am aware of that has a black tongue. Perhaps your canine friend is part chow!

i am a dog groomer and i have groomed Lhasa before with black on the tongue. i would check with the breeder that you got the dog from before i would believe the vet about the the parentage of the dog.

Where did you get your dog? If you got him from a pet store, he very well could be mixed with something else.

Chows are not the only dogs with black or purple spots on their tongues.

Other breeds known to have members with spotted tongues are:

Airedale, Akita, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Belgian Malinois, Bichon Frise, Bouvier de Flandres, Bull Mastiff, Cairn Terrier, Chinese Shar-Pei, Collie, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian, Doberman Pinscher, English Setter, Eurasier, Fila Brasileiro, Flat-coated Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Gordon Setter,Great Pyrenees, Irish Setter, Kai Ken, Keeshond, Korean Jindo, Labrador Retriever, Mastiff, Mountain Cur, Newfoundland, Pomeranian, Pug, Rhodesian Ridgeback Rottweiler, Shiba Inu, Siberian Husky, Tibetan Mastiff,

I can see how that would be upsetting if paid good money for the dog. Are you planning on breeding the dog or is it a family pet? Either way I am sure you are feeling defrauded. You have to decide how much this bothers you. If you have the dog and you love it and really do not care if it is a pure, then let it go. If you plan on breeding the dog or showing the dog that is really bad. I have a purebred dog that I love to pieces and if I found out she was a mut I would be mad. I would probably consider a lawsuit based on the principle of the thing. First thing I would do is check out the AKC website. They have detailed breed info listed for every breed. Did you buy the dog from a person you are familiar with? Can you call him/her and talk to them about this? Did the breeder give you papers for the dog? You have papers and a receipt to have any legal recourse. Next, I would contact some local kennel clubs. There are kennel clubs that specialize in breeds they might be able to give you a second opinion. Call them and ask questions. Call other reputable breeders, most breeders are nice and willing to do anything to help promote the breed. If you find that your dog is indeed a mut and was sold to you as a pure then you would have legal recourse in small claims court. In the future never buy a dog from anyone that is not well recommended. I researched my breeder for months before buying from her. I went to her home, I contacted past customers and had the dog vet checked the day I got her. Good luck.

I'd contact the breeder and ask for a copy of its papers or family tree and if it says its purebred just let it go. It doesn't matter if a dog is purebred or not it will love you anyway.

I have a Giant Schnauzer and he has black spots on his tongue. There are a huge amount of breeds that have spots on their tongues. The Chow Chow is most notable b/c it can have a completely black tongue and it is way more common in this breed.

If you are really worried about whether or not your dog is purebred you can look on the AKC website. They now offer genetic testing in dogs. Of course, the owner of the Sire and Dam would have to agree to it. Besides your better of spaying and neutering your dog unless you have intentions of showing. It shouldnt matter if your dog is mixed as long as you love him/her.
