My dog is 5 weeks into her pregnancy is it normal for her to start to loose hair on her belly?

i went on holiday in june got my friend to look after her and i think she tied while i was away so i think she may be further than 5 weeks she keeps going in the pantry under the stairs she is very clinging at the moment every were i go she follows.

My dog is 5 weeks into her pregnancy is it normal for her to start to loose hair on her belly?

Ah bless her. Yeah its perfectly normal for her to lose her belly hair, she don't want her babies getting a mouthful of hair at dinner time! Its just nature taking its course. She's looking under the stairs to check that its safe and if it is she'll make her 'den' there. Encourage her to go there by putting an old, clean blanket there and make sure theres no big gaps in the floor or walls ( you dont want to lose any babies! ) and that its not draughty or cold. Once you've made it lovely and comfy she'll probably have them on the sofa ha ha, females are so unpredictable! You can't choose for her sadly, she'll pick her place herself and you sound the sort of owner that will let her do whatever she likes, good on ya! She's clingy with you because she's a bit frightened bless her. She's having babies and wants her mum, you! If you let her sleep on your bed ( i do mine ) she might have them there so be prepared. My dog did that to me years ago and i woke up thinking i had rats on my bed ha ha. She obviously wants you there so let her pick her spot and keep your eye on her. Stock up on old towels and blankets and plenty of newspapers plus weetabix for the babies when their weaning. Get Mum some weaning powder ( from the pet shop, sprinkle on mums food only ). Good luck to you and your dog, its a truly wonderful experience, lucky you x

Sounds like she is close to labor to me. she is trying to find a nesting place. Make her somewhere quiet and cozy to have her pups in. They like a box or something enclosed (den like)with a blanket or such. If it has a lip of someking in the front is good to kepp the pups from crawling out and getting lost from the momma. Sounds like she wants you near her, so this is probably her first litter and shes a little scared.

It has been a long time since I bred my shelties but from memory I think the hair around their bellies did thin. Probably to make it easier for the pups to find nipples. Her belly is also bigger so it may just look like less coat.

Have you taken the dog to the vet? They may be able to give you a more accurate due date.

Set up a whelping box soon so that she gets used to it before the pups are born. It is really important to make sure she is getting lots of high quality protein. Lots of raw meaty bones and offal - try to stay away from artificial food with grains as a major protein source. Dogs don't absorb this type of protein properly. Feed her several times a day as she will have less stomach capacity and always have fresh water available.

My dog is 5 weeks into her pregnancy is it normal for her to start to loose hair on her belly?

yes it is normal for your dog to do this as her body is preparing it self for the puppies to be able to find her teats easily when they arrive depending on what date in June your dog mated she could very well be more than five weeks if it was early june she may only have 1=2 weeks to go take her to your vet. all the best on the new arrivals. JET.
