my dog is a long hair chihuahua and is almost 2 years old. he seems to always need to have his mouth occupied. weather it is with a finger, the corners of furniture, anything that is around him. i try closing his mouth with my hands then yelling at him *bad biting!* he wouldn't listen. he just bites my hands way harder then ever!he has sooooo many chew toys it is hard to count them all! his biting is ruining our friendship. i cant have people over without worrying he will bite them! please please help!!

Make sure he has toys and thing to play with. Change them out from time to time- they get tired of chewing the same raw hide bone all the time. My dogs like a certain shape.

Couple of tricks to try with the mouthing:

Make sure you are not playing any games that encourage it. Your dog can't tell the difference between now it's ok to bite and now it's not.

When your dog bites you - yip in a loud high pitched voice. If he bit one of his litter mates too hard - they would cry out so you mimic it. This worked with one of my dogs.

However, had to use a different trick with the other dog - yipping did not work -- when he would start to bite and would get too rough (usually he's biting your hand) - just slip one finger to the back of his throat. Just enough to trigger his gag reflex - but not to hurt or make him vomit. After doing that a few times - dog number two got the idea.

Neither of these tricks worked for a friends dog. She started to spray herself and her guests with the bitter apple spray. Her dog just finally realized that people don't taste good.

When he bites you, roll him on his back, put your fingernails around his neck (just hard enough to get his attention) and in a growl voice tell him NO. This is what the alpha dog in the wild would do to cure him of the problem. It should only take once or twice and he'll learn.

Have you ever heard the sound a puppy makes when it is hurt by and older dog? It is a kind of pitiful yelp. Make that noise, like you mean it. He should let go immediately. This seems to be a hardwired response. It is dog for, "Seriously, that hurt!". Then say, "No bite!". He must learn that he cannot put his mouth on you, ever. Cut back on the pampering. Limit his toys and let him know who's boss. Crate train him asap.

LOL!! That's easy! Your dog is playing with you. That's how most dogs play. To make him stop, You simply say No in a Demanding (But not scary voice) Stare him down and don't pay him any attention for a while until he gets the hint. Be Patent! It will take a while.

whenever he does something bad, spray him.

whenever he does something good, treat him.

start to cry as if you were a dog when he does it. If that doesn't work, there is a product called bitterapple that you use, whenever he bites you, put the nozzle up to his mouth and spray, it tastes awful to them, but will do no harm, and I swear it works, it worked for me, and you can use it with bigger dogs to keep them from jumping on you too.

Sounds like he's the boss. Did you try the spray bottle? When he goes to bite your hand or furniture spray him in the face with a little spray bottle then right away offer him a chew toy or a bone. Be consistent in your effort, do it again and again and don't give him a break...he will give up before you do.

Please don't roll your dog on the ground. Although wolves do that in the wild, there is no evidence at all to show that domesticated dogs understand this behaviour. Even the Monks of New Skete who originally came up with this theory have withdrawn their claims and declared them false.

Your dog, at 2 years old, is a regular playful dog at his "terrible twos" stage. He loves to play and he loves attention, and he has learned that when he bites you he gets attention (which is you saying "bad biting!" - it's negative attention, but attention nonetheless).

Look at a bunch of puppies playing together. They are ALWAYS chewing on each other's tails, ears, paws, anything they can get their teeth on. However, when one guy bites too hard, the other yelps and runs off. This teaches the first guy - when I bite with this amount of force, the game is over. You pick up where his brothers and sisters left off. Whenever he bites you, yelp, get up and leave the room. Don't make eye contact with him or acknowledge him at all. If he follows you, you can "time-out" him in a separate room for about 5 minutes. If he barks, rap on the door and say "No!" and wait for 30 seconds of silence before releasing him, or else he will learn that barking will get him his way.

As for biting your furniture - your dog needs to learn how to stick to his toys. Get all his chew toys into one area of the house that is accessible to him, preferably in a familiar room. This becomes his "toy pile". You have to supervise your dog at all times when he has free roam of the house. If you can't supervise him, crate him. This is because you CANNOT allow your dog to get away with chewing furniture even when you're not around - it will teach him nothing. When your dog is chewing furniture, go up to him and say "No!" Then rush him happily to his toy pile and pick out a nice toy for him. Let him chew it and praise him, and encourage him with a few games of fetch or tug. In a few weeks, if this is done CONSISTENTLY every single time your dog chews a piece of furniture, you will have a dog that deliberately seeks out things only in the "toy pile" to chew.

Does your dog get regular exercise in the yard (if you have one) or take walks. If not he might be bored and nowhere to direct his energy but your furniture or you. Is he neutered? That might cut down on aggression. Get him a kennel or carrier he can go to when friends come over, so you don't have to worry about him chewing on them!
