My children are 1, 3 and 5 and we recently had to put our lab down due to allergies. So I'm use to haveing the extra responsibility of a pet and small children. This time I am wanting a small dog that can be in the house with us, yet enjoys playing fetch and going for walks. Many small breed dog are not so good with little children. Many people have said that "IF THEY GROW UP TOGETHER...." but I don't want to get a puppy and fall in love with it then find out its not a good match for our family.
I really love the look of a MinPin, Weinner dog, something with sleek hair and small. If anyone has any experience with small dogs and children please me select a breed right for us.
Thanks so much!

I think a dachshund would be a great choice because they love to play with kids . I own a dachshund and she loves going for walks and playing in the backyard so i think you and your children would enjoy a dachshund .

I have had several Westies (West Highland Terrier) throughout my life and have 2 now and they are the best dogs ever. They are not too big and they do not shed. You need to get them groomed every few months but not shedding is nice. They are very friendly and love walks and to play and be played with. The kids in our neighborhood just adore them

Very small dogs tend to be bad with kids. My Jack Russell Terrier is great with the kids I babysit, though. Beagles are great but not as small, and Chiweenies are good with kids, too.

Skipperkees are awesome little dogs, clam and love children, so are jack russel terriers, although the jacks are sometimes very hyper, especially the males.

according to the stats, King charles Cavaliers as the best family dog - and from my experience (i'm a dog groomer) they as fantastic!!!! other than that, silkies are good - don;t get a jack russell, they are high maintenance..... KCC arent aggressive, they are intelligent and will train easily and are just gorgeous!!! I would look into them - they do need grooming every 8 weeks or so..... goood for you for looking for a pet to have with your kids :-)
Beagles are also great dogs and pets for kids because of their temparment..... very intelligent and low maintenance..but get a purebred not a mix...

I wanted a small dog in the house when my kids were small but I didn't want to have shedding so we got a poodle as a puppy and she was great with my kids. I think pretty much any dog that is raised with kids will be fine. Just make sure the kids understand about being careful with the puppy.

Although dachshunds are my favorite kind of dog, I urge you to not get one because they are not recommended for children (they sometimes get nippy and are hard to train). I think you should get a beagle, jack russel terrier, puggle (beagle-pug mix), or another mix because these dogs are easy to train and good with kids (a lot of mixes are less prone to health problems and are easier to train.

Rat Terriers- especially if you like the look of a Min Pin- I love these little guys, but Min Pins can be a bit more, say "difficult". A rattie is a great little dog- they are terriers, but to me, they are the most easy going of them all. They are always happy, friendly and they just love kids. I have these dogs, and they are just fantastic.

I have a cairn terrier and he is great. He is really smart, plays fetch and has a ton of personality. You can read more about them on the link below. Also don't get caught up in the full breed thing. Mutts make great pets, they tend to have less health problems and live longer.

HI...If I'm reading this right; you had your Lab put down due to allergies of someone in your house? Was this dog old??? sick??? I'm sorry...if you put your other dog down just because of allergies in your household then I'm not sure you should have any pet in the house. If something else happens and it doesn't work out will you have that pet put down also?
I only say this if that is the case...if that is not the case then I totally apologize.
Anyways....I have quite a bit of experience with many many breeds..large and small....I've done animal rescues and have bred yorkies and chihuahuas. Chihuahuas are great for children that have allergies and they have BIG hearts and are extremely playful.
ONCE again....I only say this if you did indeed put your Lab down because of family issues....You should NOT have pets.....there are too many rescue organizations that could have taken your pet and placed him in a good home.

Take the temperament issues seriously to find a match to your family. If you don't you will likely end up getting rid of the dog and traumatizing the family. My wife is a professional dog trainer and we see that happen all the time in her business. BTW I agree with DawgPro. I see how kids torment and abuse little dogs. If it doesn't hurt the dog, then it makes them mean and aggressive. People often think they have a little dog who is being good with kids, but in fact it is just terrified with fear all the time and shuts down. This will be YOUR dog, not the kids. Get the dog that fits your temperament and will be YOUR friend for life. Then teach the kids to respect that.
Good luck.

Just want to put in a vote for a good, old fashioned mutt. Getting a puppy is a little like having another baby in the house- why not rescue an adult dog from a local shelter? A dog that is a couple of years old will already have a developed personality to some extent, and the people at the shelter will be able to steer you toward a dog that is OK with kids (though it is important you teach the kids to be nice to the dog, too). Plus, you'll know exactly how big the dog is going to be, if he/she is grown. Rescuing a dog is a good thing for your kids to do, as well. So many animals are put down needlessly every year just because they never got a chance to join a family.

Jack Russell Terriers are small and sleek. They are very active and good with kids. They are a one family dog and very friendly with strangers. I have a Jack Russell and love her to death. Most Jack Russells live until about 15. I think this is the right kind of dog for you and your children. Good luck!

Dachshunds aren't that good with small kids, they can be snappy sometimes and can get their backs injured easily. Cocker Spaniels are good dogs, they have wonderful temperaments (but some can be timid, so make sure to get one from a good breeder to make sure it's well bred and won't have health problems). Pugs are nice too. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are extremely fun little dogs with nice temperaments. Go to dogbreedinfo.com and look up breeds that you are interested in, they have good, in-depth analyses of health, temperament, size, trainability, etc of all the breeds. Good luck!

Firstly, I am hoping the lab had the allergies.
Such young children for a puppy. Can you supervise your children well enough to prevent them from accidently injuring a puppy?
Then, a small puppy? So easily broken? I know of too many stories of small boned pups accidently getting squashed. Even a toddler accidently tripping on a puppy. A lot of small breeds can be snappy, feeling they must "protect themselves" (other reasons too) and the tougher little dogs may be "too tough" and "too feisty" for your young kids. Most puppies play bite, jump up to play with their sharp little toenails. You need to consider your children too. A little one year old who is a great target...a three year old who may need to hit at the puppy to protect himself....
Actually, I think it would be better to wait a couple of years before getting a puppy. Your kids will be more responsible and be able to enjoy the puppy more too.

Min pins are great dogs, but tend to be temperamental and may not be the best with small kids. Dachshunds on the other hand usually do well with kids.

Hi there! I love the look of min pins as well, but unfortunately they tend to not be great with kids. I have younger kids myself, and we opted for a pug. As we researched the breed more and more, we read about common health problems (nose and eyes mostly). So with that, we opted for a pug cross. She is crossed with a min-pin! With having kids so young, they are a bit more hardy and can withstand 'kidplay' better than most small dogs. They have a 'happy-go-lucky' attitude and are forever faithful (generally speaking!). They do shed minimally (depending on weather and food). We love our mutt! She did take on the pug side more than the min-pin side, but her nose is brought out more (no problems)!
