there could be a number of reasons from allergies, mange, and some others. Teh best thing is to have a vet do a skin scraping.

Could be allergy's, has anyone spayed their lawns were you've walked.? Could be allergic to flea bites. If it's almost bald it's been going on far too long and you should get your dog into see a vet as soon as possible.

This could be a case of demodex mange, which are mites that are already living on the dogs body spreading out and multiplying. This could be very iratating to your dogs skin causing your dog to chew away where it is bothering it the most. Go to your vet asap so they can possibly do a skin scraping to see what the problem is.

hot spots are a stress related illness. Neutering and spaying dogs greatly reduces this. You can also keep him more occupied. Play with him and take him on long walks. This behavior is akin to digging. It can also be attributed to change of enviroment, food or bordum.

My dog has airborne allergies and that's what she does if I don't get her to the vet for treatment. He gives her a low dose steriod shot to stop the itching (only one a season, long term use of steroids causes liver/kidney damage) and a nystatin cream. Last year I waited too long, trying antihistamines and home remedies and she was a literally a bloody mess. Allergic reaction to file bites and food allergies also can cause the itching. Take you dog to the vet, he's probably miserable. Good luck.
