Not that this will help you but.....It's well worth the money, less stress for your pet and you if you reconsider. After trying to give my Pomeranian summer cuts and nicking his little testes while we were both stressed I decided to leave it to the professionals!

Rather than going to a dog salon, you could try your local vet.

Sign up for a pet grooming course at your local community college, if there are any near you.

Most importantly, don't you think you should have thought of this before you purchased a breed that will require constant grooming?

A puppy cut on a shih tzu at a place like petco or petsmart should cost around $40. You only have to do it every few mos. You can trim (very freakin carefully) around his eyes and butt to help keep him clean and able to see. (use blunt tipped scissors for added safety and never cut close to the skin)

I would really suggest taking him to a professional groomer. I would also suggest taking him while he's still very young because he needs to learn how to accept grooming.

Grooming costs a lot because it is a skill and in some ways an art. It's not something that just anyone can do. If anyone could groom a dog, their would be no need for groomers.

You can use good (sharp) scissors to clean up around the face, legs, and butt if you aren't comfortable using the clippers. Just get some practice in. Take just a bit off at a time until you get it where you want it. If you want to use the clippers, which will be much faster but a little more difficult to use, make sure you buy a set for pets that have the different sized guards on them...it will make the process easier on both of you. There are a bunch of differnt types and it is usually better in the long run if you buy a bit better pair because on some of the cheaper models, the blades will dull out a lot faster and then you either have to buy new blades or have them sharpened often. Make sure you have a freshly bathed, completely dry dog when you use the clippers or they will dull out even faster. And make sure you keep them oiled as per the instructions. You could either take him in the first time to get him trimmed up at the salon and just keep it trimmed following the cut they did, or just play with it. Good thing is if you mess up the cut and he looks goofy, it'll grow back :) Just make sure you keep the hair brushed up without any matting and you'll do just fine. Have fun!

This is why people need to do their research before getting a dog! See if you can take a class or get a groomer to show you how to do it on your own, otherwise suck it up and pay a pro.

DO NOT USE AN ELECTRIC RAZOR, real groomers have special combs that they attach to the end of the blades to keep from cutting the dogs skin. If you try at home and with no idea what you are doing you will hurt your dog

You can try and cut their hair with scissors, I stress try, but unless your dog is really really calm I don't think they will stand still and your haircut will prolly end up looking just as bad as a human who cuts their own hair. And be really really careful around their face. You might also want to get somebody to help hold them still

If groomers are to expensive then you might just bring them in and get the groomer to use a 'reverse ten' blade on them, that'll cut their hair so short you won't have to worry about cutting it again for at least 6 months

Drop the cash on a professional. You wouldn't want some inexperience person coming at you with a pair of scissors would you? If you take your dog to a pro you can speak to the groomer while he/she is working on your dog and ask them for pointers or where you can learn how to do it yourself. Just please leave the first one to the professionals.

MOST salon's for small dogs only charge 35 to 45.00 for a groom. And usually is good for 6 to 8 weeks. If you find that expensive, wait til you have to make your first emergency vet trip.... oh... and just regular vet visits for NEEDED shots, spaying/neutering etc. is NOT cheap either. Maybe you should have done a little more research on that breed or on owning any dog.

Even a skilled experienced groomer risks injuring a dog (slicing open an eyelid for example)

Add on that an unskilled and nervous groomer with a first-time puppy groom... it's a disaster waiting to happen.
