i have a large dog with dense hair and like to keep him clipped short to help with the shedding and keep him cooler. i have a cordless one i bought at walmart but it takes so long to clip him

The walmart is essentially useless for what you're trying to do. If you plan on clipping your dog on a regular basis, invest in a corded clipper that you can purchase blades for, it will take less time and the blades if properly cared for will last a long time.
