Dog shedding question...?

I'm thinking of adopting a dog (found her on petfinder). She's a mix breed. I don't want a dog that sheds (I currently have a min. poodle). My question is, when I go to meet this new dog, I'm going to run my hands over her to see if she sheds. She's only 5 months old. If she doesn't shed now, is there a chance she will as a full grown adult? Do puppies she more, less, or the same as adults? I just don't want to think I'm getting a no-shedder and end up with dog hair in a year!

Dog shedding question...?

Puppy coats don't shed like an adult dog's coat. It has no undercoat.

The only breeds I know of that don't shed much due to coat texture are poodles, Bichon Frise, wheaten terriers and bearded collies. If the pup you're looking at is not one of those breeds, expect it to shed.

Dog shedding question...?

Actually, yes; my dog didn't start shedding until she was about a year old. (She doesn't shed very much, though; once a week I just sit her down in the garden and brush her out.)

Dog shedding question...?

does petfinder say what kind of mix she is? if the dog is mixed with a non-shedding breed, chances are the dog will shed a little but not as much as if it were full bred. puppies shed less due to their size. find out what the dog is crossed with if possible.

Dog shedding question...?

Puppies do have a puppy coat that they lose in adolescence when the adult coat comes in. They do tend to shed less than when they are adults. So it may be hard to tell how much the dog will shed at this point.

Most dogs shed at least a little.

Dog shedding question...?

If she's a poodle mix, she probably won't shed. But if you run your hand over her now, you'll probably get about what you'd get when she's an adult. If you don't want the shedding, try to get a poodle mix or a tibetan terrier mix.

Dog shedding question...?

Need to know what kind of mix she is.... Some dogs are single coat, some double coated...etc.....ALL DOGS SHED. No matter the breed. Even the Mexican hairless and powder puff do. Do not be fooled by a short coated dog. Such as a lab.... very shedding breed. Let pet finder know what your needs are and what you expect out of your new pet, and they will be able to help recommend a breed that will work out for you Good for you for adopting. So many pets, not enough people. Good luck and take care......
