Retired racers require very little in regards to grooming, and are minimal shedders. A bath once or twice a year, a monthly nail clipping and daily toothbrushing is all that a grey requires.

By adopting a retired racer, the difficult puppy years are already behind them. Their personalities are already developed. Some rescue organizations place the dogs in foster homes prior to adoption to assess their personatlities so they can find the best possible match to prospective owners lifestyles.

Bichon Frise's are cool little dogs. My boyfriend's grandmother has one and she is a complete DOLL! Look into them because I believe they are hypoallergenic. I can't remember about the shedding but the dog seems to be really low key.

But, personally, your last sentence kinda bothers me. Dogs are akin to children. Replace my word dog with children in the following sentence: Dogs were not made to be there for YOU when YOU want to play with them. Dogs need care and supervision and love and attention just like children do. If you can't be "there" for the dog, I think I would avoid it.
