Looking for a small-medium sized dog that doesn't shed?

I'm considering a small to medium sized dog that does not shed. I want something people friendly and pretty cute and friendly to other dogs. I hate having dog hair all over the place. Minimal to no shedding would be a plus.

No chihuahuas.

What are your suggestions?

You have listed "poodle" as large, and "toy poodle" as small- there are also miniature poodles that fall in between. A toy is under 12", a mini is 12"-15", and a standard is over 15" Report It

Most likely a Poodle.

I have a bichon and he has very little shedding and he's adorable. Very friendly and loves to cuddle. He's about 7month and 7.5lbs.

My family has a West Highland Terrier. My father had allergies and we find the dog does not shed that much (next to nothing on clothes and floor) and is also hypo-allergenic.

Poodle or Bichon. However, they need heaps of grooming!! Go to www.dogbreedinfo .com and take their quiz. be totally honest and then research the breeds that it comes up with. Then go to www.petfinder.com to find your new friend. And please, spay or neuter!!

You should definitely look at the Shih Tzu breed. They are small to medium, seldom bark, do not shed, and love people.

Remember that any dog that does not shed will have to be groomed, since its hair will need frequent trimming.

its gotta be a west highland terrier. They have sooo much personality and are so loyal. I wanted a small-medium dog that would be a great addition to my family. Never ever do i have problems with dog hairs.

The only problem.

They take up half the bed!!

i have two bichons that never shed, if you brush them everyother day it removes any loose hairs..

They are quite small, my female weighs in at 9lbs and my male is 19lbs.., so size can vary..

All dogs shed some.

That said, you might want to look in to a mini or standard poodle or a bichon. These breeds have a coat type that catches the shed hair so it doesn't end up all over the house, they do need regular grooming though, because the shed can cause matts, which can lead to skin problems, not to mention a ratty looking dog.

Try looking into info on Poodles (3 sizes- Toy, Miniature and Standard), Bedlington Terriers, and Bichon. Go to The Kennel Club website and look for descriptions of breeds, then take some time researching each one to find the right breed for you. Even though they don't shed, these dogs still require grooming/trimming.

Any poodle mixture will do.

You can get a Schnoodle (schnauzer poodle - had one myself for 16 years - best dog ever!) or a Cockerspaniel Poodle mixture... any poodle mixed with a small dog will work beautifully. They're smart, loving and very, very playfull dogs that do not shed.

Go to www.petfinder.com to find your new dog.

Well you have a few choices. I myself have a Bichon Frise. They have curly white fur and most get up to about 12 or 13 pounds, although ours is bigger and is about 19 pounds (and it's not just that she's overweight either.) They're really nice dogs, but grooming is a big issue with them, because the coat is curly, it can get matted easily, and because it doesn't shed it needs to be cut often.

Another choice would be a poodle. A miniature poodle sounds like the right size for you; they are larger than the toy size and a little more sturdy. They have a very good coat that doesn't shed much and it's also good for allergy-sufferers, however it is curly too so grooming can be a pain, just like with a Bichon.

You could also look into a Havanese. I've heard they make very good pets and they have a longer, straighter coat than a Bichon or poodle which would be easier to maintain. However around where I am they are pretty uncommon and can be expensive.

Some other choices you have are Maltese, (but they are very small, only about 6 pounds) a yorkshire terrier, (also very small) or a Shih-tzu. They are more sturdy than a Maltese or Yorkie.

Whichever you pick, make sure you do lots of research to make sure it suits your lifestyle. Good luck!

Edited to add: another great dog would be a miniature schnauzer. They are probably around the size you want and they have a wiry coat that won't get tangled as much as say a poodle's!

Cockers are good... I have one and it doesnt shed alot. I do groom her everyday cause she has the cocker cut. She also needs her hair cut every 3 weeks or so, I do it here though. there are alot of groomers that can do cockers though.

They are a small dog and if raised right from an excellent breeder than they have wonderful temperments. Mine is wonderful with kids. She is not inbred or linebred either.

I would also suggest a bichon they are good dogs. a yorkie sheds but not alot.

I dont like poodles we call them puddles here. Or chihuahuas nothing i can say about them (bit by one and havent like them since)(admire people that have one from afar)

as far as a medium dog... look at ones that are low shedding.

Labs are good.

Cockapoo or Shih Tzu are very friendly and love to cuddle.

But ,they do need to see a groomer every couple months or so.

A dog from the bichon family fits your criteria perfectly! They don't shed %26amp; our very friendly. As mentioned, however, the downside is they do require regular grooming. Grooming costs are Haircut/Bath $35-45 Bath only $25-35 in our area. I usually take my dog to the groomer every 6 weeks %26amp; give her a bath at home inbetween appts. She gets about 4 haircuts a year. The other downside is they are "velcro" dogs %26amp; like to be around people, so it's best not to leave them home alone for 8-10 hrs while the owner works.

Havanese (because I have one)

Bichon Friese

Coton de Tulear

Any of these would be a great dog. As mentioned, however, the Hav and also the Cotons are very expensive because they are somewhat rare ($1500-2200). I think they run 2x3 times the price of a bichon friese. I'm familiar with all these breeds %26amp; they are great little dogs -- of course, I'm partial towards the HAV!

  1. We are partial to Standard Schnauzers, as we have had two for almost 6 years now. They are medium in size (30-40lbs) and don't shed. Please note that non-shedding dogs have hair (not fur) that grows and needs to be groomed. My wife learned to groom our dogs. More info on Standards can be obtained from our website www. squidoo.com/lifewithstandardschnauzer
