What food for my dog, and how it effects the coat?

I've asked alot of questions lately concerning my dog who is a golden retriever, now I have another one. First I've noticed his coat looking a bit thin lately, when I got him I looked at his parents and they had these very beautiful thick coats...his is still really soft but I'm still concerned. (He's only 3 months old by the way). When I got him his coat appeared much thicker and fuller.

I will say that lately I have had to been pulling alot of burs out of his coat from when he plays outside and with it has come some of his hair. My concern is that maybe he's not getting proper nuitrition. Lately I've been feeding him the cheap stuff but Im thinking about bumping up to something like iams or something, will this help improve his coat and will his hair start growing more thicker and fuller? Or do I just need to be patient and wait it out? Will taking him to a grommer help..how often does dogs hair grow..are there cycles or something?

DP has it right, all those foods (especially Beneful) are actually harmful to dogs.

Look into Innova, California Natural, Wellness, and Artemis.

All have websites, all are good.

I personally feed my dog Canidae. I'm extremely happy with it.

California Natural Skin and Coat Supplement works wonders. www.naturapet.com for more information.

Puppies do go through a ugly coat phase, it's fine.

he is only 3 months? of course his coat was much thicker and fuzzier before! He is loosing his puppy coat! Its normal.

i can't tell you anything about the coat problem having never owned a golden retriever before, but if you are looking for a better kind of food to feed your dog i would suggest Beneful. My dog really likes it and it keeps her healthy.

Forget Iams/Eukanuba, Pedigree, ALL Purina, Ol Roy, Science DIet, Kibbles N Bits, Beneful and all those crappy foods..

You assume that Iams is a good food, but you should read the ingredient listing.. It's garbage like the rest of them.

Check out something like Canidae All Life Stages.

It's likely that it's the time of year, thinner coat for summer, and he'll be getting his winter and adult coat in soon. Good coats need good quality food, and a good grooming routine.

It's probably shedding. I have a dog and he's 2 years old and still shedding. If you are worried just ask the vet.

What are you feeding him?

I would switch him to a even higher quality brand that is much better than IAMS or any of those so called "Premium" brands. Try something like Solid Gold, Candiea, Wellness, etc. These foods have more natural ingredients and have no by-products, glutens, corn, fillers. And they are much better for your dog. I switched mine to Solid Gold and have seen wonderful changes in them! Their coats are much shiner and fuller. One of mine doesn't scratch or bite his tail anymore. They all have more energy. They also eat alot less because their are no fillers. So these brands may look expensive, but in the long run they last a lot longer so it actually saves you money.

The reason why it's getting expensive to feed two dogs is because you are feeding the crappy food to them. I have 3 dogs and a 33lb bag of Solid Gold lasts me almost 2 months. Yes they are small dogs, but I was buying a 25lb bag of crap EVERY week for them, before I switched them.

I have a golden retriever too. they start to change their thickness of their hair, but then they grow it back again. if you still dont feel right, you can take him to the vet and they will check. and food...get dog food with the #1 ingredient as meat, so they wont poo as much. it works wonders!

If you want to feed your dog holistic food, get ready to pay up. You can always make your own food for the dog,me personally I just switched to Eukanuba.I think Eukanuba is better than everyone is saying. My dogs love it, and they look great.Ask your vet, if you're gonna ask anyone.

I would suggest tossing all those crap food in bags and switching to a raw diet which includes raw meat, bones and organs. I switched my two dogs 閳?golden retriever and Pomeranian 閳?to raw half a year ago. Just a few weeks later, their dull coats became softer and shinier and thicker. Good luck!

Eskie mama2 has it dead on. My Apbt`s are fed Solid Gold and it is the best food for them. Good answer.
