My wife and I are considering a dog. Our little girls just love animals. We're not big animal people, but we love how their faces just light up when they see kittens and dogs. I'm a bit allergic to cats, so don't want to do that. We don't want all the dog hair in the house and prefer a small dog. Should we even get one, and what kind?

hey, if you and your wife aren't animal lovers then i don't recommend you getting a dog, try something smaller like a guinea pig or a mouse. since your kids are young they won't be able to be responsible for the pet fully. you will have to be the main carers for the dog like feeding it, taking it for walks, grooming, vet bills, and the scooping of doggy litter in your backyard. but if your willing to take on these responsibilities then you should get one.

a non-shedding dog is almost rare to find, i think you should go for a low-shedding dog breed like the West Highland White Terrier and expect to pay around $800-1000. Miniature Labradoodles are good with kids and low-shedding almost hypo-allergenic and cost $800.

I owuldn't recommend getting a dog until your yongest is four or five. You Should also ask your pediatrician that same question. My youngest has just turned five so we are looking into a pet. Report It

I know a Golden Retriever might shed a lot but it's the best for kids and the kindest =)

Pretty much every dog sheds at some point unless you get a Mexican Hairless! Your best bet would maybe be a lab. You need time to take it to parks an give it plenty of attention and exercise though! They are great with kids but are very hyper at times.

Our lab has been the best with our kids, my sons are 12 and 9, we've have Pepperoni for 5 years, and he's loving and good with all their friends too. I wouldn't suggest a poodle, poodles and kids don't mix well, they bite more than any other dog I've read.

Schnauzers are good dogs becasue they don't shed, but they will need groomed every six weeks or so. Golden retievers are good with kids. It's up to you though.

for small children golden retrievers/labs are best..i wouldnt suggest a small dog..as they tend to be a bit agressive towards children.

The best dog to get ( in my opinion ) is a toy poodle or tiny toy poodle. The toy poodle weighs up to 7lb tiny toys are 2-4 lbs. That is what i have is 2 tiny toy poodles they don't shed and are extremely smart. They are small but playful, mine even play fetch with there toys

I would suggest a pug. They are very sweet and loving, good with children, and loyal to the family. Hope that helps!

I don't think it's a good idea to get a small dog..for small kids just because they may want to play and some dogs don't like that and aren't built to handle roughousing. but if you really want a small dog you could try a chinese crested, they have little or no hair, but still produce dander so you can still find someone in the house being allergic to it. An Italian greyhound is medium sized but has short hair and is very engertic, though getting them trained can be work. BUt it all depends on the dog.

get a miniature poodle they dont shed at all. and you cantake them to a groomer monthly to keep them clean and pretty. they are sooo smart and easy to train.

a boxer or a black lab are the best for kids but get them why they are pups so you can teach them and trainthem and so they will get used to the young kids

I agree "most dogs shed" contrary to what you may hear. A hairless breed won't but most of them are small, and small dogs ARE NOT GOOD FOR CHILDREN under any circumstances.

I've raised dogs my entire life. I have two girls also. I have a doctor buddy that has tried to convience me to get a Portuguese Water Dog for 4 years.

I finally did and I must tell you it is the best dog ever. My breeder is from Nebraska. I keep my little man in a sports cut vs. the atrocious lion cut.
